Biodiversity - SCAR EBA program

The biodiversity database holds Antarctic and subantarctic flora and fauna in support of the SCAR Life Sciences programme EBA (Evolution and Biodiversity in the Antarctic). For further details, see the EBA website.

Evolution and Biodiversity in the Antarctic (EBA)

Database icon The biodiversity database holds Antarctic and subantarctic flora and fauna in support of the SCAR Life Sciences programme Evolution and Biodiversity in the Antarctic (EBA) for 2006-2013. EBA will explore
  1. the evolutionary history of Antarctic biota,
  2. how biological diversity in the Antarctic influences ecosystem function, and
  3. how the biota will respond to environmental change.

EBA is the follow on project from the now finished Regional Sensitivity to Climate Change in Antarctic terrestrial and limnetic ecosystems (RiSCC) project. This database will focus on the Terrestrial and Limnetic domains.

Bioregions

The terrestrial areas of the Antarctic and Subantarctic are being classified into regions for comparing biodiversity and patterns of distribution.

EBA Listserver

The EBA Listserver at eba@lists.aad.gov.au is used to allow members to contribute and receive messages. You must have valid registered email address in order to send emails.

To subscribe to this new list, please contact the Data Centre using the feedback form and mention the EBA list server.

Publishing observations to external organisations

The Data Centre has been sending biological distribution data via the Darwin Core schema using Distributed Genric Information Retrieval (DiGIR) query protocol to GBIF and OBIS since December 2003. The data is now also being aggregated at SCAR-MarBIN, which as of May 2006, has being recognised as the Antarctic regional node of OBIS. As at June 2008, the Data Centre contribution is over 750,000 records.

See the list of published data collections with observation counts.

SCAR - Scientific Commitee on Antarctic Research

SCAR-MarBIN - SCAR Marine Biodiversity Information Network

CAML - Census of Antarctic Marine Life

OBIS - Ocean Biogeographic Information System

GBIF - Global Biodiversity Information Facility

Science Bibliographies - there are several sets that cover Antarctic biology.
